Gamay
Dominique Piron Morgon La Chanaise 2020
Cellar for up to 9 years. No need to decant before serving.
The cru of Morgon is known for producing some of the Beaujolais wine region’s most intense reds and this exquisite example from Dominique Piron is no exception. The La Chanaise begins life on Dominique’s south-easting facing slopes where his 50-year old Gamay vines are planted on well-draining granitic soils which are rich in iron oxide.
Here the climate is continental with harsh winters and warm summers with plenty of sunshine which helps ripen the grapes while retaining decent levels of balancing acidity. Once the grapes destined for La Chanaise have reached optimal ripeness, Dominique manually harvests them and carries out a fermentation and maceration process in cement tanks for a period of 15 to 18 days.
The finished wine displays a classic Morgon flavour profile with ripe cherries, red plums, roasted coffee beans, tobacco, anise and hints of nutmeg and cinnamon from the unique soils here. The soft tannins and well-rounded, smooth mouthfeel mean that the La Chanaise is ideal to drink now with hearty game dishes or grilled meats, but it will also continue to develop additional nuances and complexities if cellared over the next decade or so.
