Gamay
Dominique Piron Morgon Cote du Py Aux Pierres 2016
Drink now or cellar for up to 5 years. No need to decant before serving.
The Piron family can trace their roots in Morgon right back to Etienne Bailly whose birth was recorded in 1590. For the past 14 generations the family have been winemakers in this celebrated corner of Beaujolais which is famed for its powerful expressions of the local Gamay grape. Dominique has taken his family’s centuries of local knowledge and winemaking expertise to craft his own remarkable wines inspired by this intimate connection with the land.
This masterful Morgon comes from a small plot in the cru’s top vineyard, the Cote du Py, and is the Piron family’s flagship wine. The terroir helps craft a wine with remarkable richness and a well-defined structure along with intense dark fruit flavours which become even more luscious on the palate. The powerful flavour profile is nicely balanced by a vibrant freshness, smooth tannins and a long, clean finish.
The Pirons favour a light-handed approach in the vineyard and winery, allowing nature to partner with them in the winemaking process. The grapes are given an extended maceration to extract maximum flavour and body and the young wine is aged in barrel for 18 months to add polish and extra complexity. The balance of freshness and power make this a great partner for game dishes like roasted quail or venison.
