Dominique Piron’s family have roots in Morgon in the Beaujolais wine region which date back to the birth of his oldest known ancestor in 1590. Since that time there have been 14 generations of winemakers who each have handed down their winemaking traditions and intimate knowledge of this land from father to son.
Today Dominique’s ancient vineyard holdings include 8 hectares of vines on the revered Cote du Py hill which is widely regarded as the source of the very finest Morgon wines. Here Dominique’s 50-year old Gamay vines are planted on south-east facing slopes on a base decomposed granite which is rich in iron oxide. Combined with the moderate continental climate, these conditions help to craft bold yet balanced wines which rank amongst the Beaujolais region’s most powerful red wines.
Dominique manually harvests all of the grapes that go into this wine and they undergo a 15 to 20 day maceration and fermentation process. He then ages 30% of the wine in oak barrels to give a subtle roundness to the finished wine. The result is a beautifully complex flavour profile full of deep berries and cherries as well as savoury undertones and hints of dried herbs. Try pairing a bottle of this exquisite Morgon with grilled meats or tomato-based pasta dishes to showcase the rich fruit flavours and firm structure.
