Domaine Jean-Jacques Girard is one of the biggest wineries in Savigny-Les Beaune, comprising 40 acres of vineyards in appellations such as Pommard, Volnay, and the origin for this Burgundy red, Pernand-Vergelesses. Head wine-makers Jean-Jacques and Victor Girard have a wealth of knowledge to draw from - their family has been growing grapes in this region for over 500 years.
Pernand-Verglesses is an underrated part of Burgundy, spanning picturesque hillsides between Aloxe-Corton and Savigny-Les Beaune. “Les Vergelesses” is one of the Premier Crus of the appellation, lying between 250 and 350 metres above sea level.
It shows a vibrant, generous nose, redolent of raspberry, blackberry and cassis, with undertones of sweet spice and flowers. The Pinot Noir grapes were harvested from a small parcel of vines, just 0.42 hectares in all, and ranging between 30 and 85 years old. The palate is a gorgeous medley of hedgerow berries, supported by an invigorating vein of acidity and spice. The finish is long and packed with tart red fruits. This is an excellent wine, worthy of cellaring for several years or enjoying alone. If you choose to pair it with food, consider something Burgundian, such as chicken Dijon, beef bourguignon or parsleyed ham.
