Pioneering winemakers David and Nadia are a husband and wife team working out of Paardebosch where they lease a farm from the owners who aren’t interested in winemaking. The couple are passionate about working with the terroir and the natural beauty of their grapes as much as possible, letting these elements take centre stage with minimal intervention in the winery.
Their Skaliekop Chenin Blanc is a fantastic introduction to this classic South African wine. Grapes are sourced from mature vines planted in 1985 on shale soils which are an unusual find in the Swartland wine region. The terroir here tends to produce a richer, more intense and complex style of Chenin Blanc that has the potential to age beautifully in the cellar over the next few years.
In the glass you’ll immediately notice the deep golden yellow hue and powerful notes of lemon peel, citrus blossom, white tea and even nutty marzipan. The first sip is refreshing yet punchy with ripe peach, toasted almond and zingy citrus mingling on the long, textured finish. A great wine to savour on its own or to pair with creamy chicken dishes, cheeses, or baked pastas.
