Decanting time: Ideally, an hour or more.
Dark cherry red in colour with purple reflections near the edge of the glass, this is an impressive wine even from its appearance. Intense aromas of violet, black cherry and strawberry underscored with hints of tar, graphite and green peppercorn. The varietal blend features prominently in the aroma, adding complexity and intrigue. Fruity flavours are carried through with subtle notes of honey and mint. Definitively Valpantena in aroma and taste. Smooth texture and well-structured, this medium bodied offering has a persistent, dry taste that is very full as far as an Italian wine goes, which is fitting for the balanced and harmonious approach. An expansive, light mouthfeel leading to a hint of sour cherry on the delicate, long finish.
A delightful offering from Corte Figaretto, the Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore, this classic blend of grapes are cultivated in the Acini Ameni vineyards located in Valpantena in the Figaretto vicinity in between Poiano and Quinto. The hills for these vineyards boast a southern exposure, in clay soil that lends to the intensity of the wine’s aromas. The traditional hand harvested grapes are closely screened for quality. Aged for approximately 18 months in French oak barriques, providing a richness that other Ripasso wines could benefit from as well. A great aging wine, this is an excellent selection for a collector who wants to build their cellar with good value offerings. The aromas become fruitier with aeration. Best served between 16-18 degrees celsius. Pairs well with beef, shellfish and rich seafood as well as mild, mature cheeses.
