Bastardo is a bright red wine, with a generous, spicy aroma. You can discover notes of ripe cherry, forest fruits and warm herbs, along with cinnamon and vanilla. It is made from 100% Bastardo, also known as “Trousseau” in France, gathered from family-owned vineyards in the Douro region of Northern Portugal.
Conceito Winery is led by the Douro Valley native, Rita Ferreira Marques. She is assisted by winemaker Manuel Sapage and winegrower Nuno Fernandes, who aid her in the cellar and the vineyard respectively. Conceito’s wines are a fantastic introduction to Portuguese wine in general, using lesser-known grapes, often in large field blends, to create a beautiful range of complex wines.
The palate is silky and comforting, coating the tongue in sweet flavours of cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant, spice and hints of leafy herbs. Bastardo grapes do not impart much colour to a wine - this one has a light ruby hue, which is contrasted by fine tannins and a dense mouthfeel. It was aged for 8 months in French oak barrels. For a tasting night, consider comparing this wine with its rival, Legítimo, also produced by Conceito Winery. Bastardo is perfect for pairing with a wide variety of food, from Asian dishes to a tomato sauce.
