Chateauneuf du Pape
Clos des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2019
Drink it now or cellar for up to 30 years. It is recommended to decant it for half an hour.
Managed by the Avril family since 1756, Clos des Papes is one of the historical cellars of the Rhone Valley. In fact, the origins of the estate date back to the 16th century, and the original nucleus of the vineyards was part of the possessions of the ancient Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The company, today under the guidance of Paul-Vincent Avril, extends over thirty hectares, with over 20 plots located in some of the best areas of the territory, in particular on the famous "Galets Roulé" platforms, formed by pebbles of alluvial origin transported by the Rhone through the millennia.
The Clos des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape is a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah with small additions of other grape varieties among the 19 permitted by the appellation. The grapes come from vines that have an average age of 30 years and up to a maximum of 80 years for the older ones. The vineyards are certified in organic farming.
The aromatic profile is intense and fresh, with floral aromas that mix with the rich fruity notes of black cherries, with some final nuances of spices and licorice. On the palate, it is rich and powerful. Tannins are firm but ripe. The wine is juicy and fresh. The finish is intense and long with black fruit aromas. It is a very food-friendly wine: it goes perfectly with lamb Tagine, rabbit with prunes, or beef Bourguignon.
