Clos de la Roilette is widely regarded as one of Beaujolais’ finest producers and counts among its top plots one of Fleurie’s most prized slopes. The journey to becoming one of Beaujolais’ best hasn’t been easy, though, with a significant proportion of the estate falling into disuse in the 1960s when it was inherited by heirs with little interest in winemaking. Clos de la Roilette’s fortunes were revived in 1967 when Fernand Coudert purchased the estate and replanted many of the vineyards.
In 1984 Fernand was joined in the business by his son Alain and together they have established the property as a true benchmark of top Beaujolais wines. The estate enjoys an excellent microclimate, easterly-facing slopes, and is planted with 30 to 80 year old vines which produce remarkably age-worthy and richly perfumed wines.
In addition to their main holdings in Fleurie, the Coudert family also have a hectare in Brouilly which is especially close to their hearts since it belonged to Fernand’s father. Their stunning Brouilly wine is a fuller, bolder wine than their Fleurie offerings, opening with rich strawberry and raspberry notes which show tremendous depth and length on the palate. This is a gorgeous example of Brouilly wines which will continue to evolve and develop if cellared over the next five years.
