Chateau de Marsannay is an old Burgundian estate, situated in the heart of the Côte de Nuits region. Along with neighbouring Chateau de Meursault, it was acquired in 2012 by the Halley family, who have overseen the estate’s transition to fully organic farming.
The chief wine-maker at the chateau is Sylvain Pabion, who turns the estate’s 34 hectares of premium vineyard into a range of enchanting Burgundy wines. The winery draws from several Premier and Grand Crus across Côte de Nuits, which harbour top-quality examples of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The largest and one of the oldest is Gevrey-Chambertin, the origin of this tremendous single-vineyard red.
“Vieilles Vignes”, meaning “old vines”, is an elegant, fragrant Pinot Noir, exhibiting a pungent nose of red fruit and sweet spice. The palate is freshly acidic, with an excellent tannic structure. You’ll discover flavours of red cherry, wild strawberry and tart explosions of blueberry. All this is underpinned by earthy notes from an autumnal forest floor. After a few years of ageing, Vieilles Vignes has the potential to develop some beautiful tertiary notes, including ripe fruits, liquorice and leather. Consider pairing it with dense meats, such as venison, a rich steak, or grilled duck.
Ok!
