Chateau de Beaucastel has been part of the Rhône Valley landscape since the 16th century when Pierre de Beaucastel built a manor house in Coudoulet. Today, the winery spans 130 hectares, with approximately 75 hectares falling within the appellation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This is a truly astonishing example of white wine from the world-famous region, crafted from ancient Roussanne vines.
It opens with a bouquet of ripe and jammy fruits, peach, apricot and lemon, supplemented by hints of brioche and honey. It is a deep golden colour in the glass. The Roussanne was sourced from Chateau de Beaucastel’s white grape vineyards, which grow over shaly soil, covered in a layer of rolled pebbles.
The palate reveals this wine’s considerable weight. It is round and dense in the mouth, with powerful flavours of peach, citrus rind and orange blossom. There are also hints of salt and a bold oaky backbone to be found. Bottled after 8 months of ageing in a combination of oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. It’s one of the most concentrated, flawless white wines in the whole of France, and deserves to be paired with an equally impressive dish.
