Hugues de Coulmet begins with an explosion of fine bubbles, followed by enticing scents of white-fleshed orchard fruits, lemon rind, and white flowers, such as jasmine and lily. Like all of Moncuit’s wines, it was made with the purest of intentions - the Chardonnay was fermented in stainless steel tanks, before being matured in the bottle for up to 3 years.
The Moncuit family have been in Mesnil-sur-Oger for a very long time, and they can date their winemaking history all the way back to Alex Moncuit, and the end of the 19th century. However, this cuvee was harvested from the vastly underrated and more southerly village of Sézanne, where the fourth generation of Moncuit winemakers own 5 hectares of windswept land.
Hugues de Coulmet is dry and fresh to the core, with a subtle, appealing mousse and balanced acidity. On the palate, you can detect notes of peach and apricot, with hints of pear, green apple, honeysuckle, almond, and a strong mineral undertone of crushed stone and salt. This Blanc de Blancs is extremely approachable, perfect for popping on a special occasion. Consider pairing with seafood, such as oysters, or a wide variety of appetisers.
