Loaded with scents of blackcurrants, blackberries, spice, and tobacco, this is a full-blooded red wine that offers any taster the opportunity to travel through time. It was crafted from 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Malbec, and 8% Cabernet Franc, all harvested from pre-phylloxera vines, harking back to the famous Bordeaux blends of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Nicolas Catena was one of Argentina’s most esteemed wine producers, and could be considered the driving force behind Malbec’s rise to fame. Today, his legacy is continued by the new face of Argentinian wine, Laura Catena, and winemaker Alejandro Vigil, a duo that also works together at El Enemigo. If you must try one Catena wine, this is probably the quintessential choice – a full-bodied red with undeniable character.
Its complexity is clear from the beginning, as it hits the palate with notes of cassis, blueberry, dried herbs, and baking spice, supplemented by subtle hints of seashell minerality. It spent 18 months ageing in French oak barrels before release, adding a backbone of oaky spice. It offers well-balanced acidity and fine, structural tannins. This Catena Zapata Bordeaux-style blend is worthy of pairing with any red meat dish, mature cheese, or classic Argentinian steak.
