Owned by Franco Bianco and his wife Gabriella, the Castello di Verduno estate is focused around a charming 16th century building in the village of Verduno which sits right by the limits of the Barolo appellation. The couple took on talented enologist Mario Andrion in 2000, but their daughter Marcella also plays an increasing role in the operation of the winery.
The family are passionate about the Slow Food movement and sustainable agriculture. As well as insisting on organic viticulture, they use only indigenous yeasts during the fermentation process and prioritise local grape varieties. Their Bassadone Verduno is made with a rare indigenous grape called Pelaverga which has largely been abandoned by local grape growers. The family decided to name this unique, light-hearted wine Bassadone or “little kiss” in honour of the variety’s reputation as an aphrodisiac amongst the inhabitants of Verduno.
Finished in stainless steel tanks to enhance the pure varietal character, the Basadone displays a lively ruby red hue in the glass and aromas of cherry liqueur, strawberries, and cracked black pepper. On the palate the distinctive character of the Pelaverga comes through, offering a medium body, fine tannins and ripe red berry flavours. This is a versatile gastronomic wine which is equally at home simply paired with a plate of salami or served alongside a rich mushroom risotto, salmon sashimi or small game birds.
