Set in the rolling hills of the Val d’Elsa just northwest of Castellina, the historic Castello di Monsanto estate was founded in the mid-19th century. In 1960 the property was purchased by Aldo Bianchi and shortly after his son Fabrizio set to work planting new vineyards and introducing revolutionary water-cooled stainless steel tanks and Slavonian oak barrels. Since 2001 Castello di Monsanto’s winemaker has been Andrea Giovannini who was previously responsible for winemaking at the famous Ornellaia estate in Bolgheri.
The estate currently has 72 hectares of vineyards which are predominantly planted with Sangiovese. The vineyards sit at 280 metres above sea level on mineral-rich soils which offer excellent conditions for producing top quality Chianti. Their Chianti Classico Riserva is a great example of the estate’s elegant and accessible winemaking style.
Once in the winery the grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and the young wine ages in a combination of 225 litre and 500 litre French oak barrels. Ripe red cherry, sun-baked earth and subtle hints of dried herbs define the nose while the first sip offers a medium body, elegant tannins and a bright streak of acidity which brings harmony and poise. A great wine to hold in the cellar for another decade or so, although it can also be enjoyed now alongside seasonal game, fresh pasta served with a rich ragu sauce, or charcuterie and cheeses.
