Ideally drink now through 2019
Ribera del Duero, where this wine hails from, is a terroir marked by extremes; hot and dry in summer, cold in winter, and little rainfall throughout the year. These factors, combined with the sandy, nutrient poor soils, make for expressive, complex, and delicious wines. The Camino Romano, a 100% Tinto Fino made by Dominia Romano, is no exception. Crimson red in color, this wine displays aromas of cherry and blackberry pate de fruit, with an elegant palate that is extraordinarily well balanced. Black cherry, bramble fruit, and light hints of clove, smoke, and toast flavors are clean and fresh, with an acidic finish that leaves you wanting to take another sip.
A lighter bodied style of Tinto Fino, the Camino Romano would do well paired with a Provencal roast chicken on top of mushroom risotto, or a duck cassoulet.
Owned by the Cusine family of Pares Balta, Dominio Romano was founded in 2005 with the same principles that govern the Cusine family’s other wineries: low intervention winemaking, dry farming where possible, and old vines planted on only the best of Spanish terroir. Dominio Romano is no exception, with bush trained Tinto Fino vines that are between 15-30 years old, with one parcel on the property a pre-phylloxera planting that is over 120 years old. The Camino Romano is meant to be the wineries fresh, fruit driven expression of Tinto Fino, with a cold soak prior to fermentation to extract color and flavor without too much tannin, and a minimal oak treatment following fermentation.
