This is a tropical, off-dry Pinot Gris from Burrowing Owl, with rich scents of melon, stone fruit and pear, mingling with more herbal notes of sage and chamomile tea. As with all of Burrowing Owl’s wines, the Pinot Gris grapes were harvested by hand from estate-owned vineyards in the southern reaches of British Columbia, Canada.
The winery was founded by structural engineer-turned-winemaker Jim Wyse, in 1997. He takes a terroir-centric approach to wine-making, using organic farming and minimal intervention methods to express the special terroir of British Columbia through a range of incredible wines. The winery sits at the northernmost tip of the “antelope brush”, a semi-arid steppe that begins in the rain shadow of the Cascades, in Washington state.
This is a white wine for summer days, bursting with flavours of peach, nectarine, grapefruit and ripe orchard fruits. It showcases a round, honeyed texture with an inherent sweetness, balanced beautifully with refreshing acidity. The vast majority of the wine was fermented in stainless steel, while 1.5% of the brew went through malolactic fermentation in oak barrels, adding a subtle, velvety texture. Look for notes of sage and honeysuckle on the delectable finish. Pair this wine with pungent blue cheeses, fruit salads, or spicy dishes that require some taming.
