Bota Velha Unico

Drink it now or cellar for up to 25 years. It is recommended to decant it for an hour.

After a nearly 30-year career as a winemaker and consultant throughout Portugal, João Silva Sousa launched his Bota Velha project in 2017, opening a winery in Penajoia. The project focuses its attention on old vineyards which, thanks to their deep roots in the soil and low yields, produce grapes, and therefore wines, very concentrated and with great balance and elegance, strongly representative of the terroir of the Douro Valley.

Bota Velha Unico is a blend of Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional and 3 different vintages (2017, 2019, and 2020). The grapes come from 3 old vineyards. The winemaking practices are directed by winemaker Tiago Alves de Sousa from Quinta da Gaivosa. The finished wine, of which approximately 2000 bottles are produced, is aged for 24 months in barrels. The label is also unique; there are different color combinations and no two labels are the same.

The wine reveals a dense color with ruby tones. Its aromatic profile is fresh and fragrant with notes of dark fruit, and spicy and balsamic hints. On the palate, it is rich and full, soft and balanced. The tannins are firm and well integrated and the finish is long and warm. It is a wine with a great personality that pairs well with red meat.
