A Birthday to Remember with DAOU & Colomé Celebrating my mother’s birthday was made even more special thanks to two incredible wines—DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 and Colomé Auténtico Malbec 2020. The star of the evening was undoubtedly the DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon. From the first sip, it enveloped us in its rich, velvety embrace. The deep dark fruit flavors, hints of cocoa, and perfectly balanced oak made every glass feel like a true indulgence. It was bold yet elegant, a wine that effortlessly brought warmth and joy to our gathering. Seeing my mother savor each sip with a smile made it all the more memorable. The Colomé Auténtico Malbec also delivered beautifully, with its pure expression of high-altitude Malbec. It was powerful, with ripe blackberries, spice, and a smooth, lingering finish—an excellent complement to the evening. These wines didn’t just enhance our meal; they became part of the celebration, elevating every toast and conversation. A heartfelt thank you to DAOU and Colomé for making this special occasion truly unforgettable!

    This is a powerful dry red wine, made from the lesser-known Bobal, an indigenous Spanish grape. It showcases an enticing bouquet of floral notes and intense fruits, reminiscent of Garnacha, intertwined with rustic hints of dried herbs. Mineral undertones add a layer of complexity, hinting towards the clean and tactile palate.

    Bodegas Ponce, under the guidance of Juan Antonio Ponce, is renowned for its innovative approach to the Bobal grape in the La Manchuela region of Castilla La Mancha. At the winery they handpick their grapes earlier in the season than most neighbouring producers, giving their wines an inherent, characteristic freshness. The vineyard, named "La Estrecha" due to its narrow vine spacing, features granite soils and vines around 75 years old, imparting great complexity to the brew.

    La Estrecha is a fresh take on Bobal, elegant and easy to drink, with good acidity and a fine astringency. You can discover flavours of blueberries, black cherries, and subtle fruit pie notes. The wine was aged for 11 months in French oak barrels, imparting a silky tannic quality. The finish is long, with a quintessentially Spanish and delightfully fruity aftertaste. It will be wonderful alongside tender red meat, such as veal, ripe cheeses, or spiced sausages.

    La Estrecha envelops us with its aroma of ripe red fruits, such as cherries and raspberries, intertwined with a soft spicy touch reminiscent of black pepper. In the mouth, it is concentrated, offering a silky texture that slides revealing layers of mineral and floral flavor, with a persistence that invites you to continue enjoying. This fermented in an oak foudre and matured in used 600-liter French oak barrels for 10 months.
