G.D. Vajra is a historic family-run winery located in the municipality of Barolo, Piedmont. The company, which owns approximately 80 hectares of vineyards, produces highly successful and excellent wines that express a strong connection to the Langhe region.
Freisa is an ancient Piedmontese grape, less well-known abroad than Barbera or Nebbiolo, yet capable of creating wines with a strong connection to the terroir and regional traditions. Vajra has been making still Freisa since 1989. The grapes are sourced from two organically farmed vineyards, one planted in 1980 adjacent to the winery and the other planted in 1989 on alluvial soils. After a careful three-stage grape selection and fermentation, the wine ages in stainless steel for four months and then two months in large Slavonian oak barrels.
The Langhe Freisa Kyè is a fresh and deep wine that reveals a generous and broad aromatic profile on the nose, with notes of wild strawberries, blueberries, and cherries interspersed with hints of rose petals and violets, on a slightly peppery background. On the palate, it is rich, energetic, and taut, with a pleasant juiciness and dense yet well-integrated tannins. It has a good minerality and a long finish that evokes balsamic notes and slightly spicy hints. Try it with traditional Piedmontese boiled meats, charcuterie, and fresh cheeses, or spaghetti with meatballs.
