This exemplary Burgundy domaine dates back to 1809 when Auguste Moreau built the family’s cellar opposite the Champs Gain vineyard. In the 1960s the property passed to Bernard Moreau who began working on the domaine aged just 14 and quickly established it as one of Burgundy’s greatest producers of Chassagne-Montrachet. Today the property is still in the hands of the same family, Bernard’s sons Alex and Benoit, who have studied winemaking all over the globe.
Their sensational Chassagne-Montrachet comes from prized plots in the commune with the majority on the northern side towards Puligny and a smaller number in the centre of the village. The Bernard Moreau winemaking philosophy embraces minimal intervention, seeking only to express the natural character of the fruit and the terroir, crafting Chardonnays with plenty of purity and minerality.
The nose is an exuberant burst of sherbert lemon, grapefruit and ginger while the first sip reveals a bright freshness, well-rounded texture and lingering stone fruit and spicy hints on the long finish. The refined flavor profile makes it a great match for roasted chicken or creamy cheeses, and it can also be cellared for a few more years to bring out more savoury tertiary character.
