Macán is the result of the encounter between two true icons of the wine world, Benjamin de Rothschild and Pablo Alvarez (from Vega Sicilia), that took place in 2003. After deciding to establish their project in the Rioja wine region, they purchased 80 hectares of vineyards from as many as 70 different owners, for their two wines. In the classic Bordeaux style, they produce a "Grand Vin" (Macán) and a second wine (Macán Clásico).
Despite being made from 100% Tempranillo grapes, Macán Clásico is not a traditional Rioja wine, but the expression of a particular terroir: that of San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja Alta. Unlike modern Rioja wines, the Macan Clasico is aged for 12 months in Burgundian oak, more elegant than the American one, and does not use the traditional Rioja aging scale (Crianza/Reserva/Gran Reserva).
Macan Clasico reflects the character of the territory but remains an accessible wine, easy to drink, without losing the typical elegance of the wines of the two great brands that produce it. Its notes of spices, candied fruit, and garrigue, and its deep and remarkably balanced palate reflect its Mediterranean style. It is a concentrated and powerful wine, capable of aging beautifully. It goes well with grilled meat, lamb, and cured meats.
