Located near the village of Valiano just a few kilometres from Montepulciano, the gorgeous Avignonesi estate is a picture-perfect glimpse of Tuscany with a breathtaking 16th century classical villa, rolling vineyards and ancient wine cellars. It was largely due to the work of Avignonesi that the region’s flagship wine, the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, began to receive the global respect it deserved from the 1980s.
Crafted with 100% Sangiovese grapes sourced from Avignonesi’s prime vineyards in Montepulciano, the wine spends twelve months in maturing in French barriques followed by six months in large Slavonian oak casks. A final six month period of resting in the bottle prepares the wine before its release to the public. The finished wine has a gorgeous red brick hue and bright aromas of ripe cherries, wild berries, baked earth and subtle baking spices.
The first sip reveals surprising complexity with layers of rich plums, sour cherries, graphite, Mediterranean herbs and hints of cigar box. On the palate the wine presents a smooth mouthfeel, medium body and vibrant acidity rounded off by a long savoury finish. The lively personality of this Nobile di Montepulciano makes this an excellent wine to drink young alongside a platter of Italian charcuterie or tomato-based fresh pasta dish.
