Argentinian Wines

Winemaking was introduced to Argentina by European settlers in the 1500s and today it's South America's biggest wine producer. Argentinian wines have a reputation for affordability and quality, with good Argentinian wines available to suit all budgets. Summers tend to be hot and dry with irrigation provided by melted snow from the Andes Mountains. This helps to craft rich and opulent red wines and fruity whites which are popular all over the world.

Key Argentinian Wine Regions

Argentina's wine regions are found in the west of the country, close to the majestic Andes Mountains which run the length of the country. In the arid north is Salta which is home to many of the world's highest vineyards located at up to 3,000 metres of altitude. Argentina's most important wine region is Mendoza to the south of Salta where the prestigious Uco Valley sub-region is located. Much further south is windswept and remote Patagonia which is regarded as the new frontier for top Argentinian wine brands.

Argentinian Grape Varieties

Argentinian wines are strongly influenced by the country's European heritage with early settlers bringing French and Italian grape varieties with them. Argentina's most famous variety is the Argentinian Malbec which dominates Mendoza's vineyards and pairs perfectly with the country's iconic steaks and barbecued meats. Salta is known for its remarkably aromatic and floral high altitude whites made from Torrontes. Other key Argentinian grape varieties included Cabernet Sauvignon, Bonarda, and Merlot for reds and Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc for whites.
