Founded after World War II by Mario Antoniolo, the Antoniolo winery covers an area of 20 hectares, 15 of which are planted with vines, divided into five vineyards: San Francesco, Osso San Grato, Castelle, Borelle, and Valferana. The vineyards that have a southwest exposure can therefore benefit from adequate insolation and shelter from the cold currents of the Alps by exploiting the foothills to the north. The company produces Gattinara wines of the highest quality, far from any globalization of aromas and flavors, and characterized by a marked minerality and acidity.
The Nebbiolo grapes for this Gattinara Riserva come from the Osso San Grato vineyard. The vinification takes place in cement with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is aged in large oak barrels for 24-30 months and in the bottle for 12.
The wine shows a very lively and bright garnet-red color. The aromatic profile is intense and complex with spicy and mineral notes, balsamic nuances, and aromas of strawberry jam and other red fruits. On the palate, it is austere but round, vigorous, and rich. It is a wine with a strong personality and an interesting savory vein. The finish is long and fragrant. Leave it in the cellar for a decade or two, or try it with braised red meat or game.
