Alma Negra or “Black Soul” is named after the dark, handsome character of the Bonarda grape which was used to make the label’s very first wines. The winery is the brainchild of fourth generation winemaker Ernesto Catena, son of the world-famous Argentinian enologist Nicolás Catena Zapata who helped put the country on the map for top quality Malbec wines.
Ernesto has sought to put his own unique stamp on the Argentinian wine scene with his strong creative drive and determination to create wines that are unpretentious and delicious to drink. In the vineyard and winery he insists on working in harmony with nature wherever possible including the use of biodynamic practices and avoidance of chemical treatments.
Ernesto’s Brut Nature Rosé is a blend of Malbec and Pinot Noir sourced from vineyards in the Vistaflores and Guallataray sub-regions of Mendoza. Here the altitude is 1100 metres and 1300 metres above sea level respectively which ensures the grapes ripen fully while retaining plenty of freshness and aromatics. This sparkling wine is made using the Champenoise method, the same as that used for Champagne, with a secondary fermentation taking place in the bottle and 8 months of ageing on the lees. The result is delicious and vibrant sparkling wine bursting with ripe raspberry, strawberry and red cherry notes with generous streams of tiny bubbles.
