Moldovan Wines
Moldova has more vines per person than any other country in the world and has a proud viticultural heritage stretching back thousands of years. During Soviet times every second bottle of wine consumed in the USSR came from Moldova. Although Russia continues to be a key market for Moldovan wines, the rest of the world is now discovering the fantastic quality and value of Moldova wines offered by this small yet mighty wine nation.
Key Moldovan Wine Regions
Land-locked Moldova is a land of gentle rolling hills that are ideally suited to viticulture with warm summers and moderate rainfall. There are four key Moldovan wine regions which are located in the south and centre of the country and sit roughly at the same latitude as Bordeaux. Codru in the centre has the largest number of vines and is best known for its refreshing white wines thanks to the cooler climate. Stefan Voda in the south-east and the Valul lui Traian in the south-west are warmer and are better known for their fine red wines.
Moldovan Grape Varieties
Moldova vineyards have embraced Bordeaux varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio. There are also interesting wines made from ancient indigenous varieties like the Feteasca Neagra, Feteasca Regala and Babeasca Neagra which translate to "Black Maiden", "Royal Maiden", and "Grandmother's Black". Moldovan wines cover all different styles and pair with a range of cuisines including typical local dishes like meatballs, barbecued kebabs, and stews.
