They say in Spain that friends and wine should be old, we definitely agree on the friends part of it!
Spain is currently the world’s second-largest wine producer, the Phoenicians first introduced winemaking some 3000 years ago, and the Romans later expanded the practice throughout the Iberian Peninsula. Spain is best known for its red wines from the rival regions of Rioja and Ribera del Duero. This vast and diverse winemaking nation also boasts numerous other regions, which are well worth exploring. We at 8Wines also love the great wines of Galicia, Castilla y Leon, Catalonia, among others. Spanish wines are very food-friendly, pairing well with the country’s cured meats, aged cheeses like Manchego, and fresh seafood from the Spanish coast or with whatever else you have in your cupboard right now. We are happy to offer you our award-winning curated selection of some of the best Spanish wines.

The Vina Alberdi Gran Reserva is crafted almost exclusively from Tempranillo grapes from the estate’s Las Cuevas, El Palo and Las Monjas vineyards along with a tiny drop of Graciano from their Montecillo estate. This is a very smooth and approachable red which can be drunk with great pleasure even when young. Enticing notes of crushed strawberries, bright red cherries and leather define the nose along with undertones of tomato and spice from the oak. On the palate there are smooth, refined tannins complemented by a medium body, punchy mid-palate and long finish
Aalto is an exciting young project founded in Ribera del Duero by Mariano Garcia, the famous winemaker of Bodegas Vega Sicilia, and Javier Zaccagnini who is a renowned expert in wine business management. The duo came together with a joint vision to produce outstanding wines from the local Tinta Fina or Tempranillo grape and capture the beauty of the terroir in this striking Spanish region. The wine is aged in French and American oak for 16 months to help soften the firm tannins and add extra polish and complexity to the cuvee. This is a dark and handsome Tinta Fina that’s bursting with ripe cherry, cassis, spice and coffee bean notes which evolve on the palate into wild berry, dark chocolate and leather
Quinta Sardonia was founded in 1998 by the legendary Peter Sisseck who also founded the famed Dominio de Pingus in Ribera del Duero. The estate marks the best clusters of grapes as they ripen and then co-ferments the varieties together using yeasts that are naturally found in the winery and on the grapes. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for 19 months before bottling. This careful and attentive approach to winemaking produces a luscious red wine that exudes rose petal, dark chocolate and sweet spice aromas. The first sip reveals a full body, intense fruity flavours and firm tannins which make this fine bottling an ideal candidate for extended ageing in the cellar
Named after the 23rd letter of the Greek alphabet, PSI has been described as a labour of love by some and “One of the greatest and most exciting wines I have ever tasted” by wine expert Robert Parker. Dominio de Pingus Psi is bright purple on the eye. The nose brings pronounced aromas of cherry, dark berries such as blackberries and blueberries with a hint of vanilla. On the palate, cherry, cassis and blackberry are balanced with well defined tannins and acidity that offers a very fresh, fruit forward wine that is a pleasure to experience. The finish is long and rich with an almost sweet edge
Ritme is Albert’s youngest red Priorat wine which is made with 70% Garnacha and 30% Carinena grapes sourced from vines which are up to 80 years old. These old vines give incredible intensity and richness to the wine along with a distinctive minerality from the slate soils which are so typical of the Priorat region. As soon as you open and serve this wine you will notice the seductive juicy red fruit aromas and hints of toast and sweet spices from the 10 months of ageing in oak. In the mouth the wine is incredibly smooth with gentle tannins and concentrated fruit flavours
This stunning wine from the up-and-coming Spanish region of Toro is crafted by talented winemaker Mariano García who served for three decades as technical director at the legendary Vega Sicilia estate in Ribera del Duero. This is a powerful, richly concentrated wine with ample dark berry and plum character which linger long on the nose and palate. The first sip is rewarded with a very smooth texture, fine tannins and a muscular structure which will respond well to several years more of cellaring
Although only founded some 35 years ago, the Artadi estate has quickly built a reputation for top Rioja wines which express an authentic sense of the local terroir. Seductive cassis, crushed blackberries and dried Mediterranean herbs delight the nose, while the first sip reveals an elegant structure, generous full body, silky soft tannins and enticing wild berry flavours. The very long finish and balancing freshness of the Valdegines make this an ideal bottle to treat loved ones on a special occasion. Try pairing this graceful Rioja with suckling pig roasted in the oven or herby lamb chops for a match truly made in heaven
This region is best known for its crisp, fresh and lightly-fizzy Txakoli wines, and this new expression from Artadi interprets the traditional style into a more serious and ageworthy cuvee. Citrus, green apples and subtle hints of white blossom define the nose while the first sip reveals a vivacious acidity, light body and crisp flavours of orchard fruits and sweet pastries ending in a very pure, clean finish. A great wine to serve as an unusual aperitif or to accompany fresh seafood, grilled fish or light appetizers
This magnificent single vineyard Godello is sourced from vines planted in 1940 on top quality granitic soils which are farmed organically and harvested by hand in small baskets. In the winery the must is fermented in stainless steel tanks and then matured on the lees for 9 months in old large oak casks to add extra complexity and body. The result is a creamy yet refreshing white with plenty of bright tropical and citrus fruit notes balanced by hints of brioche and toasted nuts. The rich flavour profile makes this a fantastic partner for cheeses, roasted chicken or creamy risottos
One of the top names in Ribera del Duero today, Emilio Moro has been crafting intense, fruity red wines from the region’s classic Tempranillo grape since the 1970s. The Emilio Moro Malleolus takes its name from the Latin word meaning “small vineyard”. The wine is crafted from 100% Tinto Fino, as the Tempranillo grape is known locally in Ribera del Duero, which is harvested from small plots planted 25-75 years ago. The intense continental climate here in the Ribera del Duero ensures that the grapes are intensely-flavoured yet balanced with freshness and smooth tannins
otani is the result of a collaboration between renowned Spanish wine exporter Jorge Ordonez and Austria’s top sweet wine producer, the Kracher family. The nose sings with orange blossom, ripe apricots, peaches and crisp lemon zest, while the first sip reveals a racy acidity and generous stone fruit flavours. The winery ages the wine on the lees for 8 months to give a richer, creamier texture and a pleasing roundness to the wine. Thanks to its vivacious character and fragrant nose, Botani is the perfect wine to serve alongside spicy Asian dishes like Thai curries or noodle dishes
La Rioja Alta winery is headquartered in Haro and has made exceptional traditional-style Rioja reds for over 130 years since its foundation in 1890. This lively and vibrant red is crafted from 100% Tinta del Pais, the local Ribera del Duero name for Tempranillo. The vineyard sits on gentle slopes in an arid area where the poor quality soils encourage the vines to dig deep for nutrients and moisture. This helps produce intensely concentrated and deeply flavoured grapes which are harvested in the early hours of the morning to preserve their freshness and natural character
