Founded in 1858 by Edward Tyrrell, Tyrrell's is a family-owned winery located in the Hunter Valley. The company, one of the most prestigious in all of Australia, is now led by Bruce Tyrrell and his son Chris. Tyrrell's produces some of the most famous Australian wines in the world, with a distinctive, high-quality varietal character and a personality that mixes the best of old world traditions with the exuberance of new world wines.
The Shiraz grapes come from the Old Hillside Vineyard on Marrowbone Road, Pokolbin, which was purchased by the Tyrrell family in December 2017. This vineyard includes the 'Old Patch', originally planted in 1867, where the younger vines, planted as replacements over the years, have an average age of 50 years.
This wine, which combines intensity and great freshness, recalls the elegance and power of Northern Rhône Syrah. Tyrrell's Old Hillside Shiraz is fragrant and refined with aromas of cherries and berries, alternating with notes of spices, rhubarb, licorice, and very well-integrated oak. On the palate, it is intensely concentrated, well balanced, and with a medium body. The finish is long and fresh. It is perfect with juicy grilled steaks, with some medium-spicy dishes of ethnic cuisine, and with cheese.
