This is a gorgeous amber wine from Shumi Winery, made from 100% Mtsvane, a native Georgian grape. It opens with a bouquet of apricot, fresh orange zest, honeysuckle and quince. It was crafted in the traditional Georgian way, which involves 6 months of skin contact, while the grapes ferment in clay amphorae known as qvevri. This grants the beautiful orange colour, and in the case of this Mtsvane, a light, tea-like tannic structure.
Shumi is an ancient Georgian word that refers to the highest-quality, most authentic and unadulterated wine that one can find. Through its premium Iberiuli range, the winery aims to recreate exactly that. You can find Shumi Winery in the heart of the beautiful Kakheti region, near the famous village of Tsinandali. It has racked up countless awards over the years, including multiple gold medals at the Mundus Vini competition.
The palate is fresh and highly drinkable, bearing flavours of orchard fruits, mint, chamomile tea, and apricot, underscored by tropical hints. Mtsvane translates to “green” or “fresh”, and this can certainly be seen in this wine - it is elevated by a refreshing, juicy acidity that drives the wine forward, into a lingering, spicy finish. This is an excellent example of both the qvevri method and the Mtsvane grape. Consider pairing it with seafood, potato pancakes, or a tangy apple sauce.
