San Polo is a family winery, situated in one of the most revered locations in Italy - the mythical appellation of Montalcino. The winery’s 16 hectares of Sangiovese vines coat the side of Montalcino Hill, sitting at approximately 450 meters above sea level.
The family behind San Polo is the Allegrini family, best known for furthering the cause of Valpolicella on the world stage, but also for producing staggeringly good single-vineyard wines in several of Italy’s most famous regions. Marilisa Allegrini, also known as “Lady Amarone”, is the driving force behind San Polo’s Brunello wines, but she is supported by her two daughters, Carlotta and Caterina.
This Brunello di Montalcino was harvested from Podernovi, a 3-hectare plot with rich, clayish and mineral-packed soils. It appears deep ruby red in the glass and exhibits a generous nose of ripe red fruit, baking spice, violet and jasmine. The palate is packed with silky tannins, refreshing acidity, red and black fruits, and more earthy tones of leather, smoke, coffee and liquorice. It has excellent cellaring potential and will continue to evolve and surprise the patient wine lover for years to come. Pair it with game, red meats, mushrooms, truffles or hard-aged cheeses.
