San Polo is an Allegrini family winery, acquired by the Queen of Italian wine Marilisa Allegrini in 2007. She is now supported by her two daughters, co-owners Carlotta and Caterina, who bring their own special expertise to the equation.
San Polo’s 40 hectares of vineyards can be found on the slopes of Montalcino Hill, lying approximately 450 metres above sea level. As befits the terroir, the majority of vines grown here are Sangiovese. Their roots grow deep into clayish calcium-rich soils, allowing for an utterly pure expression of the grape, particularly in the case of this Brunello, which cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
The nose of this wine is classic Brunello di Montalcino, loaded with aromas of red fruit, violet, vanilla and coffee, with smatterings of cedar and forest floor. The Sangiovese spent approximately 3 weeks fermenting in concrete tanks, before a 30-month period of ageing in oak casks. It shows a comforting, full-bodied character on the palate, replete with flavours of plum, cherry, coffee and slow-warming cinnamon. The finish is driven along by precise, prominent tannins. Consider pairing this wine with refined red meat dishes or dishes with earthy tones, such as mushroom risotto topped with Pecorino.
