Quinta do Crasto Superior Syrah 2016

Leonor and Jorge Roquette’s family have owned the Quinta do Crasto property for over a century, although the name “crasto” means “Roman fort” and hints at a much older history lost in the mists of time. Set on the right bank of the Douro River, this stunning estate is perhaps best known for its famous swimming pool which was created by the iconic architect Eduardo Souto de Moura. Quinta do Crasto is also well-known for its wines which are crafted from some 70 hectares of prime vineyards planted on the south-facing slopes of the Douro.

This punchy red is named after the location of the vines on the family’s Quinta da Cabreia property in the Douro Superior or “Upper Douro Valley” which has 114 hectares of terraced vineyards. The grapes are carefully selected on reaching the winery and fermented in stainless steel tanks. The young wine is then aged in French oak barrels.

Cassis, black cherry and blackberry characterise the nose while on the palate there are hints of toasted oak, baking spice and smoky tobacco. A generous full body and finely-grained tannins are complemented by intense dark fruit and a very long finish.
