Founded in the 1970s by Giuseppe Castiglioni, the Querciabella winery is located in Greve in Chianti. Gran Selezione Radda represents one of the estate's first steps into producing a single-vineyard, 100% Sangiovese wine as part of the Genius Loci project.
The Sangiovese grapes are selected and harvested from three parcels: Bagnaccio, Oasi, and Rialdoli, acquired in 2007. Located in Radda in Chianti along the right bank of the Pesa stream, these vineyards sit at an altitude of 400 to 450 meters. Bagnaccio features clay-rich soil, Rialdoli has rockier soil, and Oasi is a blend of the two. The area enjoys a cool climate with significant diurnal temperature variation, promoting slow ripening and the development of vibrant acidity. Following vinification (which involves a 30-day maceration and the use of 30% whole clusters) the finished wine rests for 16–18 months in large casks, followed by another 30 months in the bottle before release.
On the nose, the wine shows a bold, complex aromatic profile featuring notes of sour cherry, dark fruit, and violet, followed by earthy and balsamic nuances. On the palate, it is rich, powerful, and lively, boasting excellent concentration and medium body. It displays a distinctive, refreshing streak of acidity alongside firm yet well-integrated tannins. The finish is long and elegant. Try it with wild boar pappardelle, roast pigeon, or herb-roasted lamb.
