Pošip is a Croatian grape, unlike any other. It is grown on the island of Korčula in the Adriatic Sea and hails from the small village of Čara - hence, the name of the winery: Pošip Čara. Founded in 1984, Pošip Čara is the oldest producer of this varietal in the world.
According to myth, the first Pošip vine was discovered in the depths of a forest, clambering up a pomegranate bush (leading to the name, a combination of “po šipku”, or “up a pomegranate”). In 1967, it became the first Croatian wine with PDO status and these days, it is available for fans of niche white wine all across the globe.
This Pošip is a beautiful golden yellow, with hints of light green. On the nose, earthy notes come to the fore - woody almond and hints of garrigue, with notes of peach, quince, mango and orange zest lurking in the background. On the palate, flavours of fig, ripe pear and apricot emerge, supported by minerality and vivacious acids. It is an easy-drinking wine overall, with a soft, honeyed texture. Pošip is best served slightly chilled on a summer day, with a helping of white fish, soft cheese or something spicy.
