Massimo Piccin founded Podere Sapaio in 1999 after finally managing to convince his father to invest in the project. The family purchased 10 hectares of land surrounding a run-down farmhouse in Castagneto Carducci in Tuscany’s coastal Bolgheri region. Over the intervening years Massimo has worked closely with consultant winemaker Carlo Ferrini to create his top quality Super Tuscan wines and has added another 30 hectares of prime land to the estate.
To maintain exceptional levels of quality the estate produces tiny quantities of just two wines, Sapaio and Volpolo, which are both named after ancient Tuscan grape varieties. Located just 10 km from the coast, Podere Sapaio offers excellent conditions for growing Bordeaux varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot thanks to the sunny summer days moderated by cooling sea breezes.
Volpolo is an opulent Super Tuscan-style wine primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon along with a smaller quantity of Merlot and Petit Verdot. Succulent plum and dark berries dominate on the nose along with hints of warm winter spice and toast from the 14 months of ageing in French oak barrels. On the palate there is a generous full body complemented by ripe, smooth tannins and a powerful structure. A great wine to serve with hearty red meat dishes or to keep in the cellar for a few more years.
