Helios is a robust yet refined expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, harvested from the region of Coonawarra in Southern Australia. It begins with a layered nose of ripe plum, cassis, liquorice, and seasoned oak, revealing more complexity as it breathes. This is a fantastic wine for ageing, and it will no doubt benefit from several more years in the cellar.
The winemaking history behind Penley Estate dates all the way back to 1844, and the first endeavours of the esteemed Penfold family. However, the estate itself was founded in 1988, by Ang and Bec Tolley, the heirs to the great winemaking houses of Tolley and Penfold. In the cellar, they have employed the skills of Kate Goodman, one of Australia’s most exciting winemakers.
On the palate, the Helios Cabernet Sauvignon’s powerful character hides behind a veil of round, silky tannins. It opens with concentrated notes of cassis, blackberry and blueberry, accompanied by subtle hints of cedar, mint, cocoa and coffee. The finish is long and mouth-drying. Before release, the wine spent 16 months ageing in French oak and 6 months in stainless steel. Helios is ideal for pairing with a mature cheese, roast lamb, or a high-quality steak.
