This is an intriguing, full-bodied Alsatian red, with a brooding nose of dark fruits, earthy red brick and minerality. It is a subtle field blend of Pinot Noir and several of its close cousins, such as Pinot Beurot, Meunier, Blanc and Gris, sourced from limestone-rich soils - similar in character to the soils of the Cotes de Nuits in Burgundy.
The incumbent wine-makers of the Deiss family, Jean-Michel and his son Mathieu, come from a long line of grape growers, blacksmiths and bell makers, who have been in Alsace ever since it became a part of France. The domain itself was founded in 1947 and can be visited in the middle of the Alsatian Grand Cru area, in the town of Bergheim near Ribeauvillé.
Burlenburg is a rustic, full-blooded wine, alive with acidity. The Pinot Noir brings incredible structure and fine tannins, while the Pinot Beurot adds a subtle elegance to the blend. On the palate, you can discover a voluminous mouthfeel, with swirling flavours of ripe raspberry, plum and pepper. There is also a distinctive minerality, evoking fiery volcanic rock. Burlenburg’s finish is lengthy, and the wine has the potential to age for some time. Consider pairing it with pigeon, quail, or an elegant red meat dish.
