This lighthearted, playful wine is a delightful dark ruby in colour. Aromas of dark berry, plum and cool herbs abound, and the nose is distinct yet elegantly presented with underscored hints of eucalyptus, sandalwood, cinnamon and white pepper. Enticing flavours of juicy blackcurrant and vanilla underscored with hints of capers, coffee and oak. Allspice and concentrated strawberries are distinct flavours on the mid-palate. This is a highly palatable wine with a mid-weight, and an ever so slightly sweet edge. Nice, velvety tannins with a strong yet restrained structure. A nicely balanced offering that is clean and smooth from start to finish. Bright acidity aids in the drinkable quality of this wine. Very smooth, long finish that is very satisfying with its lingering bursts of fruit.
An excellent value offering from Liberty estate, started in 1975, which is an offshoot of the higher priced Caymus estate wines by Charlie Wagner. Liberty is known for making value-driven wines that offer quality with every sip, and this vintage is a very strong testament to the winemaker’s consistent ability to reach this goal. The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is a very accessible, classically fruit-forward Californian cabernet which benefits from the warm air and light breezes of Paso Robles. Acclaimed reviewers agree that this vintage is particularly strong. Excellent for a range of food pairings, especially barbecue and grilled vegetables. Enjoyable upon opening, but this lends to more spiciness and decanting will help enhance the elegance of the fruity quality to the aroma. Serve at 18 degrees Celsius.
