Lagrein
Kellerei Bozen Lagrein Baron Eyrl 2019
Ideally drink now to 2028. Decant up to 1 hour, best served at 16-18°C
This elegant single estate Lagrein has a majestic garnet color accented by royal purple hues, that follow with an opulent bouquet of violets and rose petals. Fruity notes of mixed berry with an earthy hint of cocoa bean gently soften in the mouth with a velvety texture of smooth rich chocolate ganache. Fine tannins and a long peppery finish linger memorably in this northern Italian gem.
With a lovely texture and compelling flavors, it is a wine that pairs beautifully with rich tangy cheeses, pastas with bold tomato sauces, or spiced and grilled meats.
Kellerei Bozen’s Collection Line sources grapes from single estate vineyards. This particular bottle carefully selected grapes from Baron Carl Eyrl’s vineyards in Gries, outside Bolzano in northern Italy, where the fruit grew in a warm climate with sandy terroir. Fermentation occurred in stainless steel, but the wine was finished in big oak casks for a second fermentation. The result is a wine with beautifully layered flavors and an elegant mouthfeel characteristic of the varietal. Lagrein, related to both the strong Syrah and more delicate Pinot Noir, is known for delicious plummy fruit, and for being chewy and full bodied without being too heavy. This bottle is a wonderful showcase of the Lagrein Grieser DOC, and with rich balance now, the strength and depth of flavor will hold up to several years in the cellar.
