Kellerei Bozen Lagrein 2019

Set in the charming Alto Adige region of northern Italy, Kellerei Bozen is a highly successful cooperative which brings together some 224 local winemaking families. Their vineyards are typically steep hillside plots where conditions are perfect for producing crisp whites and light, spicy reds. One of Alto Adige’s classic grape varieties is Lagrein which is often said to produce wines with the elegance of Pinot Noir and the complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon.

This textbook example is crafted from prime vineyards set on the valley floor near Bolzano where the sandy alluvial soils and significant temperature difference between day and night help to make aromatic and intensely flavoured red wines. The grapes are harvested in October at optimal ripeness and are vinified in the traditional way followed by maturation in stainless steel tanks and in the bottle.

On the nose there are intriguing notes of red cherry, blackberry and dried violets while the first sip reveals a vibrant freshness, smooth texture and soft tannins. The bright, easy-going flavour profile makes this Lagrein a great match for dishes like fresh pasta served with a tomato-based sauce, venison, or a generous platter of Italian charcuterie.
