Gewurztraminer is thought to originate from the Alto Adige region in northern Italy where it was known by the local German-speaking population as “Traminer” since at least the 13th century. Today this mountainous land has a reputation for producing crisp and aromatic expressions of the grape like this elegant bottling from Kellerei Bozen. The fruit is harvested from the winery’s steep hillside plots around Bolzano which sit at an altitude of 400-600 metres above sea level. The grapes are then vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the delicate aromas and freshness which naturally occurs in the variety.
On the nose there is an enchanting aroma of rose, lychee and grapefruit as well as subtle hints of orange zest. The first sip reveals a bright and refreshing acidity, light body and pure, clean finish with touches of spice and ginger. Graceful and bursting with freshness, this is a great wine to serve as an aperitif or to accompany sushi, leafy salads or fresh seafood.
Kellerei Bozen’s roots date back as far as 1908 when thirty local grape growers decided to form their own cooperative winery in Gries. Over time the winery merged with another cooperative and has grown to include some 224 winemaking families with over 350 hectares of prime vineyards around Bolzano.
