Established in the 17th century in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits, Domaine Henri Magnien is one of the most renowned estates in the Gevrey Chambertin appellation. It owns approximately 7 hectares of vineyards, including several plots in the prestigious Premier Cru Lavaut Saint Jacques, Cazetiers, and Champeaux. The estate is now managed by Charles Magnien, who has undertaken a modernization process while remaining faithful to traditional production methods.
The Pinot Noir grapes are sourced from a 0.75-hectare plot in the Premier Cru La Coutiere, located in the municipality of Ladoix-Serrigny at an altitude of 340 meters. Here, the 60-year-old vines enjoy eastern exposure and grow in reddish-brown soils composed of abundant calcareous-flint debris. After vinification, the finished wine ages in oak barrels (70% used) for a year.
In the glass, the Aloxe-Corton Premier Cru La Coutiere reveals a brilliant crimson-ruby color and a broad, captivating aromatic profile with notes of fresh red fruits such as strawberry and cherry, wild berries, and hints of undergrowth in the background. On the palate, it is succulent and rounded with a medium body and light tannins. It has good concentration and a long finish that recalls hints of oak. Try it with roast pigeon or duck breast with mushrooms.
