A bouquet of wild strawberry, cassis, plum, balsamic and dried herbs greets you on the nose of this dry Tuscan red. It was harvested from estate-owned vineyards in Bolgheri, in the foothills of the Colline Metallifere. It’s a fascinating blend of Bordeaux and Italian grapes: 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, with 25% Cabernet Franc and smaller portions of Sangiovese and Petit Verdot.
Grattamacco was founded in 1977, as the second winery ever founded in the Bolgheri appellation. Since 2016, it has been a member of the ColleMassari group, forming the spine of top-notch Tuscan wine production with other esteemed wineries, such as Tenuta San Giorgio. Grattamacco have always been pioneers in the region - they are proponents of the Super Tuscan style, using smaller portions of Sangiovese, and were the first estate in the region to plant Vermentino vines.
Notes of dark fruit, chocolate, liquorice, eucalyptus and baking spice mingle on the palate. It is packed with fine tannins, cleansing acidity and layers of flavour. For a powerful, Bordeaux-inspired blend, it manages to maintain a silky, easy-drinking character, accessible to everybody. It can be cellared for some time or enjoyed alongside a rustic beef stew, steak, or gnocchi with ragu.
