La Scolca Etichetta Bianco Gavi 2019
La Scolca has been in the hands of the same family since 1917 when the great-grandfather of current owner Giorgio Soldati purchased the estate. The winery is rightfully famous across the world for its benchmark Gavi wines like this stunning “Etichetta Bianco” or “White Label”. Made in a traditional style, this youthful and exuberant white wine is made with top quality Cortese grapes from the steep slopes of the so-called “Grand Cru” of Gavi, Rovereto.
The grapes are carefully harvested by hand and then vinified according to typical local practices in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and the typical aromatics of the grape variety. The wine is then allowed to settle over the winter, spending 4-5 months ageing on the lees to add complexity and a creamier texture before being bottled in February.
The result is a crisp, mouthwateringly refreshing white wine which is bursting with delicate citrus, honeysuckle and white blossom notes. The first sip reveals a light body, bright streak of acidity and a pure, clean finish. Ideal for serving with summer salads, fresh seafood or sushi, creamy chicken and fish dishes or even a generous platter of cheeses.
La Scolca Gavi dei Gavi 2019
La Scolca’s Gavi dei Gavi is widely regarded as the benchmark for the fresh and exuberant white wines which hail from the namesake small mountain village in the Apennines. Produced in a traditional style from 100% Cortese, La Scolca’s “Black Label” wine is crafted from top quality fruit rigorously selected from biodynamically-farmed 60-year old vineyards.
In the winery the grapes are carefully sorted to ensure only the best are used for the Black Label Gavi dei Gavi. The must is partially macerated with the skins to add extra complexity and is also aged on the lees over the winter. These traditional methods help to create a Gavi dei Gavi which is both easy-drinking and bursting with attractive aromatics.
On the nose there are delicate hints of almonds, toast, and ripe white peaches while the first sip reveals a crisp acidity, touches of minerality, and a very long finish. As well as making a perfect aperitif, this outstanding Gavi dei Gavi pairs very well with all types of seafood, leafy salads, and light fish dishes. The complexity and grace of this delicious white are a testimony to La Scolca’s 100 year history of making top quality Gavi wines.
Broglia Villa Broglia Gavi di Gavi 2019
This vibrant Gavi is bursting with fresh lemon, almond blossom, and pear notes with a racy acidity which makes it a great choice to serve as a refreshing aperitif. On the palate the body is light and delicate with a smooth texture and pure, clean finish seasoned with hints of dried herbs. A fantastic partner for seafood or accompaniment for creamy cheeses, sushi, or delicate pan-fried fish like sea bream.
The producer is Broglia which is well known for its deliciously fresh and crisp wines made in the classic Gavi style. Vines have been planted on the property at least as far back as 972 AD, although the current chapter in the estate’s history can be dated to 1972 when it was purchased by Bruno Broglia. Over time Broglia became a family business with Bruno’s sons, Paolo and Piero, following in their father’s footsteps.
The family’s vineyards are located in the finest area for producing Gavi, meaning they are permitted to use the coveted “Gavi di Gavi” label. This bottling was first produced in 1989 to celebrate the birth of Piero’s son, Filippo, and has become one of the family’s favourites. The wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks as is traditional for Gavi, helping to preserve the typicity of the grape and the character of the terroir.
Villa Sparina Gavi di Gavi 2019
Villa Sparina is a family-run winery which is owned by the Moccagattas who serve their delicious wines in their Michelin-starred restaurant La Gallina on the property. In total the estate has 100 hectares of land with 70 hectares given over to viticulture and mainly planted with Cortese and Barbera grapes. One unique feature of their wines is the unusual bottle shape which was inspired by original Roman amphorae used to transport wine and other goods.
Their Gavi di Gavi is the Moccagattas’ most iconic wine and expresses the exceptional quality of the estate’s prime vineyards. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks to showcase the purity and freshness of the Cortese grape and allowed to rest for a few months before bottling.
Hints of honeysuckle, orchard fruits, and citrus zest define the nose while the first sip displays a mouthwatering acidity, light body and pure, clean finish. On the palate there are notes of ripe peach, apricot and almond blossom and a well-rounded texture. The precision and elegance of the flavour profile make this a great match for seafood, sushi, and fish dishes as well as spicy Asian salads, creamy cheeses and risottos.
La Raia Gavi 2019
This racy Gavi opens with refreshing notes of citrus, peach and stony minerality while the first sip reveals a mouthwatering acidity, light body and pure, clean finish. The must is fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve the vibrant natural character of the Cortese grape and produce a light and elegant wine. The bright flavour profile makes this a great choice to enjoy as an aperitif or alongside seafood, fish or tomato-based pasta dishes as well as charcuterie and cheeses.
The grapes for this delicious white are grown biodynamically without any herbicides or pesticides on the Ravi estate which is set in the heart of Gavi’s rolling hills. The estate was purchased in 2003 by the Rossi Cairo family who have worked hard to restore biodiversity and nurture the local ecosystem.
Wherever possible the estate seeks to work in harmony with Mother Nature and has been Demeter-certified since 2007. They aim to produce the very best quality grapes possible which in turn allows them to craft top quality wines from indigenous local grape varieties. Winemaking on the estate is overseen by Piero Ballario who consults for many excellent small Italian wineries based in the Langhe and beyond.
La Raia Gavi Riserva 2017
Set in the heart of Gavi, La Raia has a reputation for producing delicious white wines with a laser-like precision and plenty of minerality. La Raia was purchased by the Rossi Cairo family in 2003 and over the past couple of decades they have sought to nurture the local ecosystem and boost biodiversity by embracing biodynamic agriculture. In 2007 the estate was Demeter-certified and the family seek to work in harmony with nature as much as possible in both winemaking and grape growing.
This lively Gavi Riserva is crafted from prime Cortese grapes and fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve the trademark freshness and pure citrus fruit character of the variety. Grapes are sourced from the estate’s La Madoninna vineyard, a prime south-east facing plot planted on calcareous clay soils which are fertilised using green manure composed of broad beans, peas and clover.
On the nose there are delicate hints of lemon zest, rose petals, fresh mint and melon. The palate leads with a refreshing acidity followed by notes of citrus and tropical fruit on a medium body and a clean, pure finish. A fantastic aperitif or accompaniment to fresh seafood, fish or a generous platter of cheeses.
