Plavac Mali
Dubokovic 2718 Sati Sunca U Boci 2013
Drink now through to 2024. Decant 2 hours before serving.
The evocative name of this gorgeous red wine means “2718 Hours of Sunshine in a Bottle” after the copious amount of sunshine enjoyed annually on the island of Hvar in southern Dalmatia. These warm conditions ensure that the region is ideally suited for making hearty red wines from indigenous grape varieties like the much-loved Plavac Mali which is an ancestor of Zinfandel.
This version by Croatia’s leading artisanal winemaker, Ivo Duboković, is a 100% Plavac Mali which is fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks to showcase the pure varietal character. Ivo prefers to harvest his grapes late, often in late September or even October, to create a heartier, fuller style of red wine.
As is typical for the variety, the expressive nose displays plenty of ripe raspberries, blueberries and blackcurrants. The first sip reveals a lively personality with gentle tannins, rich wild berry flavours and a medium body which are all balanced by decent acidity levels. Thanks to its relaxed and well-balanced character, this young wine is an ideal choice to drink on its own or to pair with a platter of charcuterie, hard aged cheeses or fresh pasta served with tomato-based sauces.
