The great wine-making house of Humbrecht has been in the Alsace region for a very long time. They can trace their roots back to the Thirty Years’ War in 1620 but it wasn't until 1959, and their merging with the Zind family, that they began to sell wine under their own name. Pioneers Léonard and Geneviève Humbrecht built a cellar in the village of Wintzenheim, laying the foundations for the stunning range of cool climate wines that we can enjoy today.
Nowadays, the domaine is spearheaded by Olivier Humbrecht, who has begun the slow transition to organic farming. He is a huge fan of the Pinot Gris grape, which due to its neutral character, can be massively influenced by terroir and the wine-maker.
It exhibits a steely nose at first, packed with minerality, petroleum, and sharp lemon. After some time breathing it will begin to soften, showing more yeasty, nutty and earthy characteristics. It is heavily influenced by the limestone soil of Clos Windsbuhl vineyard, one of Alsace’s most revered locations. On the palate, you will discover biting acidity and citrus flavours, which slowly give way to reveal a slight underlying sweetness. This is a complex wine, and worthy of further ageing in the bottle. Consider pairing it with a charcuterie board, covered in dried meats, cheese and olives.
