Clos du Roy is a refined red wine, with a deep ruby hue in the glass – extremely dark for a Pinot Noir. It opens with an expressive nose of ripe cherry, strawberry, and violet, underpinned by hints of earth and oaky spice. The Clos du Roy is a vineyard in the northernmost part of Marsannay, sitting at 270 metres above sea level, on rich clay-limestone soils.
Domaine Jean Fournier is a 17th-century estate, located in the heart of Marsannay. However, the winery as we know it today was founded in 1962, by Jean Fournier, and is now owned and operated by his son, Laurent. Under Laurent, the winery has entered an era of organic cultivation, allowing the character of the Marsannay soil to shine through in each bottle.
Clos du Roy is medium-bodied and elegant on the palate, showcasing flavors of black cherry, wild strawberry, and red currant, with subtle notes of toasted wood, dried herbs, and forest floor. Silky tannins and balanced acidity lead to a long, harmonious finish. This wine will be a wonderful match for roasted meats, poultry, or mushroom dishes.
