One of the oldest estates in the Southern Rhone, Domaine du Grand Tinel was founded in the late 1700s under the name Chateauneuf Calcernier. In 1906 the estate became one of the first producers of Chateauneuf du Pape to actually start bottling their own wines. Today the property has 56 hectares of vines with an exceptional variety of soil types and a considerable proportion of old vines which help to produce very complex and intense wines.
The domaine’s classic Chateauneuf du Pape wine is predominantly composed of Grenache along with a smaller proportion of Syrah and Mourvedre planted on rocky and sandy soils. Once vinified the young wine is aged in a combination of large casks, barrels and tanks for 16 months to add complexity and polish before bottling and release.
The nose is heady and multi-layered, opening with luscious cassis, blackberry and plum notes along with hints of woodsmoke, tobacco leaf and dried fruits like raisins and figs. The first sip reveals a robust full body, firm tannins and well-built structure. A great wine to pair with hearty red meat dishes or to hold in the cellar for another few years.
all good
