Craggy Range was founded in 1998, by enterprising wine-lovers Terry and Mary Peabody. They have taken a thorough, homegrown approach to wine-making from the beginning, searching for their own untouched piece of land - and eventually finding it in the pristine environment of Hawke’s Bay, on New Zealand’s North Island.
Since its establishment, Craggy Range has slowly expanded to include vineyards from other amazing terroirs in New Zealand. This wine was created with Pinot Noir, harvested from two parcels within a single vineyard - Te Muna Road, in Martinborough, which is packed with nutrients from an ancient river bed.
Revealing a multifaceted nose of summertime hedgerow fruit, mushroom and lavender, this Pinot Noir is an incredible fusion of Burgundy style and Martinborough terroir. After fermentation, the grapes were matured for 14 months in French oak barriques, imparting subtle oaky undertones. Elevated berry flavours swirl around the palate, providing suggestions of raspberry, cranberry and sour cherry, with earthy forest floor hints. This is a deeply rewarding wine - approachable as is, but with lots of potential for evolution in the cellar. To maximise its potential, consider pairing it with equally kingly meals: roast game birds, such as turkey, a hearty Portobello mushroom burger, or salmon steaks.
